New firm has concrete plan

Michael Russillo, president, and Charlie Caruso have launched a new independent company to supply the construction industry with Cobiax products.

Invented by Cobiax Technologies in Switzerland, the system slashes the weight of reinforced concrete slabs by a typical 30 to 35 percent.

It also enables longer spans, fewer columns and decreased floor heights, all of which add up to lower costs, less dead weight on foundations and faster construction, according to Russillo.

“Builders and engineers have been striving to reduce the weight of concrete structures for centuries,” added Caruso, the vice president of Cobiax USA. “The latest and by far the most sophisticated extension of that heritage is the Cobiax method of voided slab construction.”

The Cobiax technology was introduced in 2000 and the slabs have been used in several hundred major construction projects in Europe and Asia.
It is currently being employed to build the new Miami Art Museum set to open late 2013.

“Charlie and I are eager to help the construction industry understand and implement the important advantages of voided flat plate solutions for all types of concrete construction,” said Russillo.
