The NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate’s Center for the Sustainable Built Environment’s fourth Annual Conference on Sustainable Real Estate, titled “Taking Stock and Moving Forward: Ideas for the Next Generation of Sustainable Real Estate,” will take place on Thursday, February 27 at the New York University Kimmel Center for University Life.
The Conference will evaluate the accomplishments of the real estate and construction industries in adopting and implementing sustainable practices in order to develop a clear understanding of what has worked and where further opportunities remain.
It is expected to draw hundreds of industry professionals, environmental advocates, and academics. Leaders from the private, public, and academic sectors will discuss new ideas for a comprehensive, cohesive, and collaborative roadmap for the future of sustainable real estate.
“It’s been more than 20 years since the first Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report was released, and the real estate industry has made a number of positive changes to address climate change since then,” said Conference co-chair Dr. Constantine E. Kontokosta, P.E., FRICS, founding director of the NYU Schack Center for the Sustainable Built Environment and deputy director of the NYU Center for Urban Science & Progress.
“But there’s far more that needs to be done to reduce energy consumption, to lower emissions, and to make our buildings healthier and more productive places in which to live and work.
“I look forward to hearing the different perspectives on what the industry has achieved thus far and how we can develop collaborative efforts between government, industry, and academia to advance the next generation of urban sustainability metrics and goals.” The morning keynote speaker is Kathleen Hogan, deputy assistant secretary for Energy Efficiency of the U.S. Department of Energy. The lunchtime speaker will be Kyle Kimball, president of the New York City Economic Development Corporation.
Divisional Dean and Clinical Associate Professor Rosemary Scanlon will make opening remarks. Stuart Brodsky, deputy director of the Center for the Sustainable Built Environment and NYU Schack clinical assistant professor, serves as Conference co-chair.
Four panel discussions will evaluate the industry’s progress to date, present new ideas and concepts for urban sustainability, and explore options for the future that encompass every stage of the development process, from planning and design to construction and asset management.
