Some of the city’s lading developers are set to take part in the 2017 Build NYC Conference where minority and women contractors can learn how to get work on projects such as the Gateway Tunnel and LaGuardia redevelopment.
Sponsored by Oriska jobs and Careers Center (OJCC), a not-for-profit that operates a continuing education and apprenticeship program in New York City, and Kernan Engineering the January 17 event will be held at the Pennsylvania Hotel at 401 7th Avenue from 8 a.m. til noon.
“Over the last three decades OJCC has trained workers to build the infrastructure that New Yorkers rely on,” said OJCC Executive Director, Jim Kernan.
“Our Build NYC conference brings together qualified contractors, many of them minority-owned, with the principals of the large development projects. Through events like this, we hope many of our contractors will continue to build tomorrow’s infrastructure.”
AECOM, a worldwide leader in construction management services, and SKANSKA/WALSH JV, a large civil, commercial and vertical building joint venture, are the top presenters. Additional presenters include the U.S. Department of Transportation and Army Corps of Engineers.
Among the project being presented are the $20 billion Gateway Tunnel, designated to replace the 105 years old tunnel under the Hudson River, which will connect NJ & NY, as well as the $1 billion replacement of the 100-year-old Portal Bridge in New Jersey with two new spans., the LGA Project to overhaul of the old terminal buildings and Columbia University Forum Project, a five-level above grade structure, including a multi-level auditorium.
