Professional Women in Construction (PWC) celebrated the $1.5B Goethals Bridge Replacement project (GBR).
The public private partnership (P3) arrangement “will provide a wealth of jobs and contract opportunities for the M/W/DBE community,” said PWC president Lenore Janis.
The project is expected to result in approximately 2030 direct job-years and in direct payroll wages of about $200 million.
Patrick Foye, executive director of the Port Authority of NY & NJ (PANYNJ), was honored along with several key PANYNJ representatives and partnering firms.
Foye noted that “The Port Authority wants to lead the way in public/private partnerships. The Goethals Bridge is an incredible piece of financial engineering.”
He referred to the concurrent rebuilding of the Bayonne Bridge, “an unprecedented piece of civil engineering,” saying that “This is the first time since 1928 that the Authority is building two bridges at the same time.”
The GBR project launched in December 2013 with substantial construction completion projected for 2017.
With over $33 billion worth of goods passing over the bridge each year, the Goethals crossing is a key link connecting several major highways and is essential to moving cargo between airports, seaports and regional markets in the NY/NJ metro area.
The scope of work includes the replacement of the existing bridge in its entirety with a new 900 ft. span cable stayed bridge and approach viaducts; six 12 ft. wide travel lanes; a 12 ft. wide outer shoulder and 5ft. wide inner shoulder in each travel direction; a 10 ft. wide bikeway/walkway; and a center corridor to accommodate future mass transit.

Port Authority consultants honored were HNTB Corporation and URS Corporation. Partners honored were the project’s developer, NYNJ LINK Developer LLC; equity member Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets, Inc./Kiewit Development; lead contractor Kiewit/Weeks/Massman, a Joint Venture; lead engineer Parsons Transportation Group of NY, Inc.; and lead maintenance Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets.
