More than 600 consulting engineers and clients gathered for the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York’s (ACEC New York) 46th annual Engineering Excellence Awards gala at the Waldorf=Astoria on Saturday, April 6.
Honors for exceptional projects in public infrastructure and private sector works in 11 areas — including building systems, structural systems, transportation, energy, environmental, waste and storm water, and special projects — were awarded at this premier event. Patrick Foye, Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, served as Master of Ceremonies.
“The work showcased at ACEC New York’s annual gala is a cross-section of the extraordinary projects consulting engineers tackle every day,” said Mitch Simpler, chairman of ACEC New York. “Whether designing the infrastructure, institutions and systems of the future on a global scale or helping out New Yorkers in a time of need — like during superstorm Sandy — our members bring a vast array of creative and technical talents to projects that affect millions of people from every walk of life.”
The ACEC New York Diamond Award was presented to 28 New York consulting engineering firms for their work on 26 outstanding projects throughout the world. The judging was based on complexity, future value to the engineering profession, original or innovative application of new or existing technologies, and meeting or exceeding client needs.
Announced at the gala event, the Empire Award — given to the highest rated project in New York State based on contributions to the economic health of an area, sustainability, innovation and creativity — went to Hazen and Sawyer, P.C. and CH2M Hill New York, a joint venture, for research and development of nitrogen removal at Jamaica Bay for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP).
The MTA and the NYC DEP were co-honored at the dinner for their responses to superstorm Sandy and received the Council’s Award of Merit. A $5,000 scholarship in their honor was presented to Christopher Budrow, an engineering student at Clarkson University.
